|Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Proffers Solution to Shortage of Nurses by Peculiar005(m): Thu Nov 2021 06:12pm|
Director Inspectorate, Standard & Accreditation for Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) Al-Hassan Udiga said the council has recommended to the federal government measures to ensure adequate nurses in Nigeria to guarantee effective healthcare delivery.
AHe said the issue of shortage of nurses is global, saying that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has also set up measures for every nation.
He added that the existing training institutions in Nigeria have been given a chance to admit students twice a year by stream one and two; for universities whose admission is once in a year and that the number of admissions has been increased.
Udiga was speaking at the second induction and oath-taking ceremony of new registered nurses in Osun State University, where he said the council has opened up the establishment of additional training institutions.
He said, “If the Federal Government wants to put a stop-gap to brain drain and travelling of medical personnel let them make the working environment very enabled by the provision of adequate human and material resources.
The issue of shortage of nurses is not limited to Nigeria, as stated by WHO In 2023, globally, we will be having a shortage of 9 million nurses.
“What is the point of going out to serve others when your house is not yet satisfied? In this light, the council decided to bring up measures that will help us have enough manpower at home and help to solve the global challenge of shortage of nurses.
“We have opened up the establishment of additional training institutions, the existing training institutions have been given a chance to admit students twice a year by stream one and two, for universities that their admission is once in a year we have increased their quota to be able to admit more students and be able to serve the populace.
