The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) is a body corporate with perpetual succession established by the provisions of the SPECIALIST HEALTH TRAINING AND PLANT MEDICINE RESEARCH ACT 2011, PART THREE (ACT 833).
*Promote specialist education in nursing, midwifery and related disciplines
*Promote continuous professional development in nursing, midwifery and related disciplines
*Promote postgraduate nursing, midwifery and related disciplines for the College
*Contribute to the formulation of policies to improve health outcomes and public health generally.
The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives is established to:
*Organise and supervise specialist training, continuous professional development and support postgraduate or post diploma research in nursing, midwifery and related disciplines
*Conduct and organise specialist examinations in nursing, midwifery and related disciplines
*Publish journals and pamphlets
*Award diplomas and certificates on completion of specialist training and confer professional distinctions
*Foster cooperation with other institutions with similar objectives
*Initiate and participate in actions and discussions aimed at improving health outcomes, and formulation of public health policies in collaboration with other relevant institutions
*Perform other functions that are ancillary to the objectives of the College
The professional academic institution aims at further nurturing a cohort of nurses and midwives with a capacity to provide specialist services for health improvements in Ghana and beyond.
The details below describe the criteria for the categories of potential members of the College and their eligibility criteria.
The descriptions take cognisance of the various levels of training of nurses and midwives in Ghana and their rights to access to career advancement through academic structures that recognise previous learning.
Also described are the emblems and colours of the College and their significance; backgrounds to the College and interlinkages.
Entry requirements to the College are as follows:
*BSc/BA degree in nursing or midwifery (minimum) and should also be a registered nurse (all nursing programmes) or midwife of good standing with Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (NMCG)
*Minimum of 3 years post qualification experience
*MA/MSc/MPhil/PhD in Nursing, Midwifery or related field is an added advantage
Duration of Programme: Residency is for 3 years, full time
Available Specialty Programs:
*Accident and Emergency Nursing
*Neonatal Intensive Care
Existing MoH Programmes to be rolled-out
Ophthalmic, Peri-operative, Critical care, Mental health/Community psychiatry and Public health nursing will be rolled-out in due course.
Programmes to be implemented in the medium to long term:
*Diagnostics in Medical and Surgical Care
*Diagnostics in Obstetric and Gynaecology
Resident and member assessment of progress and examination
Based on approved curricula, log books, project/research guides, assignments, essays and study guides shall be continually given to residents by their mentors/clinical directors to facilitate learning outcomes.
Regular facilitative supervision shall be conducted as an ongoing activity to track progress. Residents on completion of their courses shall be required to undergo both written and oral examinations to test competencies. Examinations shall be held twice in each year.
